Futsal is a 5-a-side version of soccer which has become a legitimate stand alone sport of its own over the last 5 decades. Beginning in 1930 in Uruguay, it was adopted and some would say perfected by, the Brazilians. Played in the streets, in gymnasiums and on outdoor court spaces, players perfect their skills in the smaller corridors using a low-bounce ball that more readily stays at the feet of the players.
Futsal has become much more recognized in the United States over the past decade. Multiple youth organizations provide leagues and tournaments and at least 3 adult organizations have formed to provide a league in which adult men and women can participate and compete.
The game of Futsal is renowned for its ability to develop the highest level of skills and creative soccer players. It forces players to process information quicker, therefore giving them an advantage when returning to their so beloved outdoor game. The world's most famous outdoor soccer players, including Romario, Ronaldo, Pele, Maradona, Christian Ronaldo, Messi, Socrates, Zico, Ronaldinho and Zidane, have all credited their skills in part to playing Futsal during their development at a young age.
